Fibromyalgia & Recovery Services

Fibromyalgia afflicts over 10 million individuals. 90% of them are women between the ages of 25 and 45. Fibromyalgia is a complex disorder that has an extensive list of symptoms and features that are very confusing to both the patient and the physician.

While there are no conclusive tests that can confirm fibromyalgia, the assessment provided by a qualified physician can rule out other disorders and determine the condition.

The American College of Rheumatology proposed a criteria for diagnosis: widespread pain lasting more than 3 months and the presence of at least 11 out of 18 possible points of contention. Pain is considered to be widespread when it affects all four quadrants of the body. In other words pain must be present to the right and left sides of the body as well as above and below the waist.

Many Fibromyalgia patients have symptoms similar to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Scientists have differentiated between the two conditions by noting that true fibromyalgia features fatigue, chronic sleep problems, and muscular pain. There is a regular occurrence of mood and sleep issues as well as irritable bowels.

The causes of Fibromyalgia may be the result of:

  • Physical trauma
  • Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction
  • Stress
  • Hypo-thyroidism
  • Low serotonin
  • Bacterial infections
  • Endocrine & hormone disorders
  • Sleep disorders

Scientists have determined that a miscommunication between nerve impulses of the CNS.

Nerves become more sensitive and cause an over-reaction of pain sensation. The situation leads the patient to a hyper-awareness of pain. This condition may disrupt the body’s ability to sustain balance through hormonal fluctuations. The lowering of hormones with key glands include deficiencies in human growth hormone, DHEA, cortisol, and others.

Disruptions of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis equates to the ‘master computer of the body’ being in disrepair and thus, everything gets out of synch and creates a chain effect of ill conditions. The Hypothalamus regulates such bodily functions as blood pressure, digestive processes, sleep rhythms, sex drive, body temperature, balance & coordination, heart rate, sweat volume, adrenal hormones, and metabolism.  A vicious cycle of disruption occurs and leads the victim into a severe condition.

Treatment of fibromyalgia centers on a few key areas that will stabilize the body.

This includes stress management, sleep management, food sensitivities & digestive health, and brain health. The process is lengthy and not always exact. Most patients do experience profound relief when they effectively manage the key areas of concern.
